Please contact your Senators to urge them to oppose two measures that passed the House on Thursday, September 21. (The House passed H.R. 6094 by a vote of 328-95, and H.R. 6095 by a vote of 277-140.
- Encourage state and local law enforcement to enforce civil immigration laws;
- Make it even more difficult than it is now for immigrants to find relief in the courts;
- Give the Attorney General the authority though a secret process to designate any group as a "gang," and then deport an individual belonging to that group, regardless of whether the individual committed a crime;
- Give immigration authorities nearly unfettered authority to indefinitely detain immigrants;
- Expand expedited removal to anywhere in the U.S. so that people could be removed without a court hearing at the determination of a low-level agency official.
We expect that House proponents of these measures will try to get their Senate allies to amend these bills to appropriations bills that the Senate is considering. Urge your Senators to oppose this attempt to pass flawed measures that do not address the real issues.
The Congressional Switchboard number to use to reach your Senators is 202-224-3121. Please reivew the summary of these two bills and the sign-on letter that was sent to the entire House and Senate urging opposition to including these measures on any appropriations bills, including the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Bill.
