(Washington)— Once again, the Trump administration is publicly pushing to strip citizenship from Americans in an attempt to achieve its reprehensible mass deportation goals. Media reports quote administration officials vowing to denaturalize hundreds of people by directing federal prosecutors to prioritize denaturalization cases. The Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) condemns this scare tactic--detailed by The New York Times and in previous reports by other outlets--designed to send the message to citizens who once naturalized that they are second-class citizens and will always be at risk.
For the administration to continue to launch these attacks on citizens in this way is insidious and designed to scare people who have gone through multiple immigration processes, background checks, and vetting to get to citizenship. This administration is determined to advance its xenophobic and racist ideals to instill fear in citizens and to destabilize immigrant communities and communities of color.
The ILRC is proud to stand with countless partners and communities all over this country who are pushing back against these tactics. We are seeing more people demand that ICE agents leave their towns, create sanctuary protections in their communities and states, say no to ICE warehouses, and demand their elected officials fight back to ensure all people in this country can assert their constitutional rights.
