On May 2, 2025 the ILRC submitted a comment opposing a proposed U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) rule that would expand the collection of personal information from immigration applicants. The proposed rule exceeds executive authority and violates several federal laws by requiring applicants to provide unnecessary and outdated details—like old phone numbers and family members’ information—without showing why such data is necessary. Including this information on application forms would place a heavy burden on vulnerable groups who may not have access to the requested records and could face greater risks if the information were misused.
