Since 1986, the Continuing Education of the Bar, in its “Crim Law Bible,” California Criminal Law Procedure and Practice, has included a chapter about representing the noncitizen criminal defendant. This chapter and the advice therein is often cited as establishing the prevailing professional norms at the date of any given conviction.

Thanks to the diligent work of University of California Irvine, and the generosity of CEB, we are now able to offer here scanned copies of the CEB chapters dating back to 1986.

These copies are old, outdated, and may contain incorrect information. Anyone seeking to ascertain current advice should consult with the newest editions of CEB’s manuals California Criminal Law Procedure and Practice, California Criminal Defense of Immigrants or ILRC’s resources, advisories, and manuals, www.ilrc.org/crimes.

CEB publications are distributed with the understanding that CEB does not render any legal, accounting, or other professional service. Attorneys using CEB publications or orally conveyed information in dealing with a specific legal matter should also research original sources of authority. CEB's publications are not intended to describe the standard of care for attorneys in any community, but rather to be of assistance to attorneys in providing high quality service to their clients and in protecting their own interests.
