ILRC Puts Forth a Blueprint for the Biden-Harris Administration to Undo Egregious Trump Policies

With the results of the presidential election now called by major news outlets for Joe Biden, the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) is prepared to provide support to partners, coalition members and others to protect immigrant rights and racial justice, especially at a time when many in our country will not accept the results, including President Trump.

“The ILRC will be monitoring during the lame duck session any policies that would further harm immigrants, and we will make sure our partners and coalitions have the resources they need to protect our immigrant communities,” said Eric Cohen, Executive Director of the ILRC. “We also hope that President-Elect Biden’s administration to work in tandem with Congress to not only undo the many egregious and hateful immigration policies put in place by the Trump Administration, but to create visionary policies that allow all immigrants to live with dignity. We also hope for meaningful dialogue on how our country can come together to bridge the racial injustice we continue to grapple with.”

The ILRC issued this Blueprint for the Next Administration which sets forth a roadmap for what the next administration must do on Day 1 to address the needs of immigrant communities. The recommendations in the Blueprint were developed by the ILRC Policy Team, informed by our years of close collaboration with organizations and leaders fighting for immigrant rights and racial justice, and strengthened by consultation with community-based organizations and individuals who have been directly impacted by the criminal legal and immigration systems. The Blueprint is also available in Spanish.

“We hope this new administration will act swiftly to put in place policies that allow immigrants to thrive with their families and in their communities” said Eric Cohen, Executive Director of the ILRC. “There must be an end to punitive measures that have kept families apart and cruelly detained and targeted immigrants because of the color of their skin.”

The ILRC urges the Biden-Harris administration to focus on each of the urgent issues outlined in the Blueprint immediately, including:

  • Ending immigration arrests, immigration detention, and deportations.
  • Restoring immigration relief such as DACA and TPS.
  • Ensuring immigration relief is accessible by rescinding the public charge rule.
  • Working with Congress to pass inclusive and broad legislation that dismantles the enforcement and detention systems, such as the New Way Forward Act.
