Immigrant Legal Resource Center Demands Reversal of Public Charge Rule

(San Francisco, CA)—The Immigrant Legal Resource Center demands that the Biden Harris Administration reverse the public charge rule, a campaign of fear waged against immigrant families that led many to disenroll from essential healthcare coverage and services for which they were eligible.

The Trump Administration devised a new public charge rule, adding a broad sweeping “wealth test” to our immigration system, preventing low-income families from obtaining legal status.  Under today’s executive order, the public charge rule and related policies will be reviewed, a step that is unnecessary. We implore the Biden Harris Administration to rescind Trump’s additional orders related to health care and immigration immediately and take steps to halt the public charge rule, which is already subject to multiple legal challenges.

“All the Biden Harris Administration has to do is look at all the immigrant families suffering needlessly without essential healthcare and other public services during a global pandemic to determine that the public charge rule is racist and inhumane,” said ILRC Senior Staff Attorney Erin Quinn. “The rule has created confusion and fear, muddying an already labyrinthian process to obtain status and unite families.”
