Roadmap to Citizenship Must be Inclusive of All Immigrants
(San Francisco, CA)—While the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) supports the introduction today of the Dream Act, we encourage the Biden Harris Administration to make it a priority to provide a roadmap to citizenship for all undocumented immigrants.
“Reintroducing the Dream Act is a good first step, but it’s not enough for the millions of immigrants who have suffered so much in their efforts to make better lives for themselves and their families in the United States,” said ILRC Staff Attorney Veronica Garcia. “DACA remains very vulnerable to legal challenges from Republicans whose goal is to strip every right immigrants have. This is why the Dream Act has to be inclusive of all immigrants to provide a permanent path to citizenship.”
Republicans will continue to throw legal roadblocks in the way of executive orders that cause frustrating starts and stops for immigrants trying to go through the cumbersome immigration process. The ILRC is prepared to help our partners and allies in these legal battles. Recent polls, such as this Quinnipiac poll, show that Americans, by a margin of 83 - 12%, support allowing undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children to remain in the United States and eventually apply for citizenship (Republicans support doing so by 66 - 30%.) And, in this PRRI poll, 80% of Americans back permanent legal status for undocumented immigrants, including a 64% majority that support citizenship.
