The ILRC Denounces the Reinstatement and Expansion of MPP

(Washington) – In light of the recent reports that the Biden administration has reached an agreement with Mexico to not only re-implement, but expand, the Trump-era MPP policy also known as “Remain in Mexico,” the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) issues the following statement:

President Biden vowed to end MPP and promised to welcome immigrants and people seeking asylum. This is difficult to believe when his administration continues to embrace the most inhumane and lawless of Trump’s asylum policies such as MPP and Title 42, which deny asylum seekers entry under the guise of “public health”.

“MPP is a humanitarian disaster that has put thousands of people in danger and undermined their right to seek safety; continuing any form of it is cruel and inhumane. It is yet more alarming that the Biden administration plans to expand the policy in order to return Haitians and other previously exempt migrants to danger, forcing them to remain in Mexico.” said ILRC Policy Attorney & Strategist, Elizabeth Taufa. “The move to include additional countries is a blatant attack on Black asylum seekers.”

The ILRC calls on the administration to immediately end MPP and Title 42 expulsions, and put in place a humanitarian plan that keeps asylum seekers in the U.S. and out of danger during their case proceedings.
