(Washington)—In another cruel and heartless move the Trump administration has announced that it is ending temporary protected status (TPS) for Haitian immigrants—TPS will expire on August 3, 2025 and the termination will take effect on September 2, 2025.
The Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) condemned this decision which will affect approximately 500,000 Haitians, sending them back to a country where the political conditions make their return unsafe.
This decision is yet another example of the Trump administration politicizing a humanitarian program that has allowed people to build lives, raise families, and work in the U.S. This administration has no plan in place for the children who are U.S. citizens but may now lose their parents and caregivers to deportation. Deporting mothers and fathers back to a country with uncertain living conditions that cannot support their return is stunningly cruel.
Haiti first received the TPS designation in 2010 after an earthquake devastated much of the country. TPS for Haiti has been routinely extended and expanded, due to the on-going earthquake recovery exacerbated by violence and political instability in recent years.
The Trump administration has also ended TPS for immigrants from Venezuela, Cameroon, Afghanistan, and Nepal.
