ILRC Condemns Trump Administration’s Tired Bullying Tactics
(Washington, DC)—In its latest hateful political stunt, the Trump administration published a list of sanctuary jurisdictions on Thursday, May 29, 2025. As with all other of this administration’s immigration enforcement efforts, this effort is low on accuracy, legal basis or serious policy considerations about public safety.
The Immigrant Legal Resource Center will continue to defend sanctuary policies by providing campaign support, legal analysis and technical assistance to local communities seeking to strengthen or enact these policies. Sanctuary policies are constitutional, legally valid and promote public safety.
Sanctuary policies help build trust in communities impacted by discriminatory policing practices and harsh immigration enforcement. Working toward greater trust in local communities is now more important than ever as the Trump’s administration’s false and hateful rhetoric and actions about immigrants and communities of color attempt to sow fear and chaos in the everyday lives of our families, friends and neighbors.
Additionally, the data shows sanctuary jurisdictions enjoy lower rates of crime, higher household incomes and lower rates of poverty.
Unfortunately, sanctuary policies have been the frequent subject of attack from Trump and his cronies to pressure local police and sheriffs’ offices to collude with the Department of Homeland Security ( DHS). The administration’s executive order on sanctuary jurisdictions is another tool in their enforcement intimidation playbook. These are bullying tactics. Sanctuary policies are legally sound, and will continue to be one of the most important defenses against the administration’s mass deportation machine.
