Senate Passes Bill that Cuts Spending for Healthcare and Food Programs to Increase Punitive Policies for Immigrants

(Washington)—The Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) condemned the Senate passage of the Trump-controlled bill that slashes spending for healthcare and food programs to fund punitive policies targeting immigrant communities.

The nearly 1,000-paged bill is full of goodies for wealthy Americans, who are seeing the tax cuts Trump put in place for them during his first administration made permanent, meaning they will get richer. But Americans who rely on Medicaid and food programs like SNAP will see sweeping changes as these programs will be cut, with that money given to agencies for more immigration enforcement actions.

This bill will fund the administration’s hate-fueled anti-immigrant policies. There is such zealousness to open up more detention centers nationwide to detain immigrants picked up off streets, in courthouses, at their homes and workplaces. This administration has ended temporary status protection for Haiti, Venezuela, Cameroon, Afghanistan, and Nepal. TPS ends this weekend for Hondurans and Nicaraguans.

There is no regard for immigrant families, low-income families, disabled people and children in this bill. The Trump-controlled Congress has made it clear that it will continue to approve any heinous and hateful policy Trump and his allies have that will further hurt immigrant communities.

The ILRC will continue to work with partners and allies, and urges members of Congress and other lawmakers, to stand up to these hateful policies and politicians to put a stop to the administration’s efforts to shift policies and practices to surveil, arrest, detain, deport, and silence immigrants and the people who support them.
