On July 28, 2025, the ILRC submitted a comment opposing a new government proposal to add extra questions to nine immigration forms, including applications for naturalization, asylum, and green cards. The changes would require applicants to provide Social Security numbers for themselves and family members, along with detailed employer information, all of which is invasive and unrelated to eligibility for the benefits at issue. Further, the government is misusing a fast-track process meant for simple, low-burden data collection to push through sweeping and controversial changes without proper public review. This is the third instance in 2025 of USCIS attempting to push through substantial changes through this fast-track process. The added requirements would increase the length of the forms, make applications harder to complete, and create serious barriers for immigrants—especially low-income families, survivors of violence, and those without legal help.
