Ending Racist Title 42 Order is Only First Step in Helping Asylum Seekers

(Washington)—The Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) welcomes the end of the racist Title 42 order put in place by the Trump administration to punish asylum seekers—the ‘Remain in Mexico’ program also must be scrapped as well.

“Title 42 heaped more cruelty and hardship on immigrants seeking refuge from unspeakable tragedy and pain,” said ILRC Policy Director Sameera Hafiz. “More than 1.7 million migrants were denied entry into the U.S. under Title 42, forcing many back to the dangerous conditions they were escaping.”

The Trump-era Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) policy known as ‘Remain in Mexico’ must also end since it’s a humanitarian disaster that has put thousands of people in danger and undermined their right to seek safety.

The Biden-Harris administration has sought to end MPP but a Texas federal judge stymied that effort. The Supreme Court is set to hear oral arguments on April 26 on whether the program should end or remain in place.

“It is not enough for the administration to undo Trump-era policies. The administration has to go further and be proactive and immediate in their efforts to implement policies that completely overhaul the immigration system to benefit immigrants,” Hafiz said.
