(Washington)—The Trump administration’s Muslim and African ban is fueled in hate and racism which will keep families seeking to reunite and pursue their dreams from being together--many of these families are seeking refuge to escape poverty, violence and war and the administration is instead acting with cruelty, the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) said.
The ban sends an immoral and irresponsible message that inclusion and welcoming are values only reserved for some of a certain skin color, religious affiliation or nationality. The ILRC will continue to work toward a democratic society that embraces and values all people, no matter where they were born.
The ban, which goes into effect on June 9, targets Black immigrants, immigrants from Muslim majority countries, and communities of color from 12 countries--Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. Seven countries face heightened travel restrictions-- Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.
The administration is fueled on the hopes that its policies will stoke fear and intimidation. Diversity fuels America’s success and its strength. The ILRC joins with other organizations calling on Congress to pass the No Ban Act with language intact to repeal the administration’s current bans and prevent future discriminatory bans.
