(Washington)—President Trump’s obsessive fervor to punish and incarcerate Black and Brown communities continued on Monday with two Executive Orders seeking to entrench cash bail in DC and throughout the country. The orders threaten to revoke federal funding from jurisdictions that have adopted certain bail reforms.
Trump’s order, solely aimed at Washington, DC, also requires suspects to be charged with federal crimes and held in federal custody to circumvent the District’s bail policy.
The Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) recognizes that addressing cash bail, and other bail reforms, attempts to confront some of the inequities faced by low-income and poor Black and Brown people ensnared in the criminal legal system. In addition to DC, bail reforms have been adopted in other major US cities.
Trump’s strategy of punishing and incarcerating Black and Brown communities is far from greatness, but rather a tired tactic of the white supremacist playbook, immoral and ineffective.
